‘Farming’ refers to actions taken by a player with the intention of gaining gold. Most commonly, it is used to describe a hero that is killing jungle or lane creeps; however, a ganker is referred to as a ‘farming hero’ since that is how they obtain gold. Most farm work is done by core heroes, but it is also done by other characters to a lesser extent. In spite of this, it is essential to farm consistently during Dota 2 games.
In the early game, an effective jungling ability is required to sustainably kill jungle creeps, for example, Lifestealer’s Feast or Enigma’s Demonic Conversion. However, for laning, no particular skill is required to farm lane creeps effectively. The same holds true for jungling in the late-game as well, as cores have high enough health regeneration and health to sustainably kill jungle creeps.
Carries such as Anti-Mage or Medusa that have ‘farming mechanisms’ to help them (Anti-Mage uses blink to navigate the map and Medusa uses Split Shot to kill multiple creeps at once). Supports such as Crystal Maiden or Witch Doctor can also farm jungle creeps with Frostbite and Paralyzing Cask respectively, because they have abilities that allow them to farm jungle creeps.
